A great way to challenge your tastebuds and have a wine-filled start to the new year. Cheers to making 2021 the year of trying new wines, saying yes to that second bottle, and drinking bubbly to celebrate the everyday moments. Because if 2020 taught us anything, it's that life is too short to drink boring wine.
1. Drink outside your comfort zone.
The best way to learn about wine? drink it. So once you’ve figured out what wines you do like, challenge your tastebuds by trying the wines you think you don’t like or have never heard of. Because the world of wine is vast and full of new things to discover.Start by trying this Blanc de Noir from Zimmer-Megel, a white wine made from red Pinot Noir grapes!
2. Sip around the world
Since there isn't much travelling at the moment, explore the world through wine! There's so much variation in just a single grape variety so try a wine from an unusual region or try tasting the same grape types from several different regions and see what you discover - no passport required. We'd recommend Partisano from Bodegas Más Que Vinos - a fantastic bold red wine from a little known region in Spain.
3. Try grapes you can't pronounce
There are so many weird and wonderful wines in the world so don't let an intimidating name scare you off. You might be really surprised to find that the wacky sounding German Gewürztraminer Spätlese is your new favourite. (and don't worry about saying the name right - if you say anything with enough confidence people will just assuming you know what you're talking about).😉
4. Drink bubbly to celebrate everyday moments.
Bubbly, sparkling wine, champagne, etc. shouldn't be reserved just for special occasions. Celebrate the everyday moments - like Tuesdays - with sparkling wine just because you can. Life's too short - pop the bubbly. For a well-priced everyday sparkling wine, look no further than the Riesling Sekt Extra Dry from Stein!
5. Try chilling some of your red wines.
The temperature of wine can really change everything and many people actually drink their reds too warm! So we challenge you to try chilling certain reds for a whole new flavour experience. Pinot Noir - like this Steinbock - Pinot Noir from Hôrner - is a perfect light red wine to chill and taste how the soft fruity flavours develop.
6. Try more grape blends.
Wine blends (typically called cuvées) are a beautiful thing that can open up a whole new world of flavours. Combining two or more grape types is also a way to make a totally new and unique wine since each winemaker has their own "recipe" that no one else can replicate. An example of a wacky and great cuvée is the Mouth Bomb from Zio Porco. A wild combination of six different grape types for a truly unique and flavourful wine.
