How To Pair Wine With Mooncakes
The Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner, and we're excited to celebrate with mooncakes, family, food, and great wine! For centuries wine has brought people together and is always enjoyed in times of happiness and celebration. Which is exactly why wine is the perfect companion for the Mid-Autumn Festival! A wonderful time of family reunions and celebrating a happy life.
And the other thing we love about the Mid-Autumn Festival? The food! There are so many tasty dishes but we can all agree that the flavourful fruits and mooncake treats are definitely the highlight! But while we love them, traditional mooncakes are usually dense, sweet and incredibly filling, so you'll need the right wine to refresh your palate and balance out the rich flavours of this seasonal treat. Which is why we've put together a little guide to help you find the right wine and mooncake pairings for a boozy Mid-autumn Festival!

Champagne is a great pairing choice since the dry, acidic bubbly cuts through the richness of mooncakes. The Riesling Sekt sparkling wine from Stein is the perfect match since it has just enough sweetness to match that of the mooncake and a lovely acidity and freshness to cleanse the palate. And as a bonus, a festive sparkling can just be enjoyed on its own for those that aren't fans of mooncakes. ;)

Snow Skin Mooncakes are becoming more and more popular and come in many different flavours. Not as heavy as other types of mooncake and is serve chilled - so a fruity, sweet, and semi-sparkling wine like the Flying Pig White from Metzger would be just perfect. But if bubbly is not your think we'd suggest a sweet late harvest wine such as the PIW - Hörner - Gewürztraminer Spätlese.

Not into the traditional mooncakes? You can't go wrong with an ice cream mooncake! From beloved classic flavours like vanilla, chocolate, and red bean, to unique flavours such as berries & cream or green tea, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
For for fruity or light ice cream flavours, you'll want a fruit-forward white wine with sweet flavours. The Liebfraumilch from Mann Mit Hut is a blend of Riesling, Silvaner, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau and is a perfect choice since it's also light, fruity, and has a wonderful sweetness.
But if you're reaching for the classic flavours or something chocolaty, we'd suggest trying out a red wine with very soft tannins. We'd recommend the Feuerberg Rubin from Lebenshilfe - a blend of St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Dornfelder grapes, this wine has soft tannins and sweet blackberry and fresh cherry flavours that is the perfect complement to chocolate ice cream.
