The famous region of Pfalz is Germany's second-largest wine-growing region with vineyards that span over 23,000 hectares. Located between the Rhein/Rhine river, the Haardt mountain range, and bordered by France. The word Pfalz is a derivation of the Latin word 'palatium', meaning palace. In this region, there are approximately 45 white and 22 red grape varieties grown here, with white wine grapes accounting for more than 60% of vines planted. But most notably, Pfalz grows more Riesling than any other place in the world and some of the best (and most expensive) Rieslings in the world are grown in the Haardt Mountains.
The climate in Pfalz is known to be one of the sunniest and driest of the German wine regions so it is perfect for producing Riesling and other delightfully mild white wines such as Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Müller-Thurgau, and Grauburgunder (Pinot Grigio). The white wines made here are known for having a beautiful structure, finesse, soft acidity, rich bouquets, and more power than those produced in other areas. The red wines from Pfalz are also world-famous and known for having a wonderfully delicate elegance. The most common varieties in this regain are Portugieser, Dornfelder, and Pinot Noir that have a smooth, complex, and fruity flavour.
Fun Facts About Pfalz:

- The largest wine festival in the world is held in Pfalz every year and is where the "Wine Queen" is crowned each year.
Meet The Winemaker: Hinterbichler
The Hinterbichler vineyard is located in the town of Bobenheim am Berg in Pfalz, one of the most beautiful wine-growing regions in Germany. This region is known for its incredible wines and the idyllic views of the valley covered in a sea of vines.
With its 18 hectares of vineyards, the Hinterbichler winery is family owned and operated by the young Markus Hinterbichler and his father Sylvester (aka Hibi Senior). Hibi Senior was born in Austria but moved to Pfalz after falling in love with his wine Annemarie in 1980. Since then they have been producing outstanding wines and have raised their family with a deep passion for wine growing. However, Hibi Senior's stays true to his Austrian roots by cultivating classic Austrian grape varieties and paying homage to the Austrian flag with the red-white-red vineyard stake incorporated into the design of the bottle labels.
Hinterbichler produces many white grape varieties including Riesling, Gray and White Burgundy, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc). Along with the red varieties such as Portugieser, Dornfelder, and Pinot Noir, that this region is famous for.
But the best thing about the wines from Hibi is that they've mastered making the ultimate easy-drinking wines - but in the most exciting way. Markus goes to the "roots", whether in the vineyard or cellar, to ensure the highest quality in his wines.
