Food Friday | Pizza & Wine

There are two types of people in this world: people who love pizza and liars.

No matter if it's delivery or enjoyed at a fancy restaurant, pizza in all its forms and favours is delicious and universally loved. Which is why for today's Italian edition of Food Friday we're diving into pizza and wine pairings!

When pairing wine with pizza it's all about the toppings and the sauce. Here is a little guide to help you pair at your next pizza night:

Pepperoni Pizza:

Pepperoni is a very strong flavour and is usually made with cured beef and pork mixed together with with a variety of spices such as cayenne pepper, anise, garlic powder, paprika and sugar. So you’ll need a strong wine with intense flavours to counterbalance the strong flavour of the pepperoni. A Cabernet Sauvignon or Sangiovese is a good choice - and our Mouth Bomb wine has both!

Margherita Pizza:

A Margherita Pizza has light aromatic notes of fresh basil and with it's other lightly flavored fresh ingredients such as tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella, a dry rosé is the perfect Margherita pizza wine pairing. Our dry Italian rosé Porcosporco - is a perfect choice!

Sausage/Meaty Pizza:

You'll need a wine that can hold it's own with a meaty pizza. So a more full-bodied wine works well with rich meats like sausage because of the spices used, typically fennel, anise, thyme and oregano. So with those flavour intensities a cuvée such as our In Pork We Trust - Rosso wine is great because it was made specifically to go with those rich meats.

White/Bianco Pizza:

This creamy herbal pizza is simple and incredibly delicious. It can have several variations but generally you'll want a lighter red wine like pinot noir or and creamier white like Chardonnay to complement the creamy Bianco pizza. Our Tongue Pogo cuvée is a vivid white wine with crisp fruit, distinct minerality and an underlining of subtle herbal notes, that all make it perfect to pair with this pizza!
